About Us

We work to ensure all communities across Washington state are walkable.

We help people take steps that create better places to live, learn, shop, work and play—a world that cares about health, community and design.

Our Origins

We began in 1995 as a group of citizens and professionals interested in promoting the rights and interests of pedestrians and finding ways to encourage walking. In 2001, we became an official 501(c)(3) non-profit. A grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation allowed us to hire our first staff person at the end of 2003.

Today we’re a fast-growing organization with a core of board members, staff and volunteers supporting our strategic plan.

Our Influence

We provide a pedestrian voice in wide-ranging discussions with government agencies, developers and community groups. We regularly meet with community members to discuss options for improving walking conditions in their neighborhoods. We hold on-street events to call attention to unsafe pedestrian sites and to promote a search for solutions. We also serve as a partner in important research projects related to planning, public health and policy.

Although our work centers on communities in Washington State, our reach is far broader. Our organization belongs to the America Walks, which mobilizes local pedestrian groups nationwide. We are members of the Alliance for Biking and Walking to bring leading information and solutions to assist policies. We collaborate with the National Partnership for Safe Routes to School.

Through our over 2,500 supporters and members, we are connected to dozens of local, national and international organizations concerned with promoting pedestrian issues. Please consider joining the movement!
